Lisa and Marilyn @ The New York Institute of Technology
On February 1 Marilyn and Lisa took a little road trip to Westbury, Long Island to the New York Institute of Technology in Westbury, NY, to speak to Occupational Therapy students about how they made their profession of OT into an alternative business. The lecture was part of the student's administration course.
Marilyn and Lisa went through a Power Point presentation revealing their start-up 26 years ago - before computers, iPhones and Blackberries. They started with a 2-line phone from Radio Shack, a Rolodex of therapists names, an ad in the New York Times and a composition notebook to track interviews and therapist billing.
26 years later the two OT's are still going strong - continuing to evolve their business to meet the changing demands of health care - but keeping to their mission of placing Occupational Therapists, Speech Language Pathologists, Physical Therapists, Special Ed Teachers and Social Workers. The students were inspired by the presentation and enjoyed the group process where they were given problem business scenarios to work out - offering their suggestions to Marilyn and Lisa.
The students were left with an important message - follow your dreams and don't listen to naysayers. If you do this - anything is possible!
