In order to ensure revenue capture through rehabilitation  service  delivery in long term care, it is crucial for providers to understand how Medicare and Medicaid reimbursement systems work.

This course will provide therapy assistants and therapists new to LTC with the knowledge and understanding of Medicare and Medicaid reimbursement and how these realities impact on care delivery and caseload management. This presentation will review payment systems (Medicare and Medicaid), how they work, what is meant by Case Mix, RUGS and MDS and will demonstrate how reimbursement issues impact demand for therapists. Documentation requirements and specific treatment actions will be covered to help therapists contribute to the revenue potential of their facility while providing the best standard of care.


Learning Outcomes:

  • Understand the difference between Medicaid and Medicare
  • Define what is meant by Case Mix, MDS 3.0,  and RUGS IV
  • Identify the role of the COTA and PTA under  Medicare and Medicaid guidelines
  • Discuss specific clinical tools used to document treatment, and be able to indicate medical necessity when providing treatment
  • Specify how the medical review process works, when to provide group treatment, and what the role of nursing is under these new guidelines

This course provides CEUs  for Occupational Therapy Assistants, Physical Therapy Assistants, and therapists new to the Long Term Care/Subacute arena.
