Long Term Care Council with Richard Sabel

September 15 was yet another outstanding Long Term Care Council Meeting. The guest speaker was Richard Sabel, OTR, professor at SUNY Downstate, who gave an excellent presentation on the use of reimbursable alternative therapy techniques with the long term care patient.

While these yoga and Eastern medicine strategies can foster functional outcomes and pain management, they are rarely used with this population. Richard enthralled the audience with his overview, which will be expanded upon in our upcoming two-day, in-depth conference on December 5 and 6.

Richard explained how techniques such as Yoga, Feldenkrais and Tai Chi can be integrated with more traditional approaches for excellent outcomes. He also demonstrated how these techniques if properly applied and documented can result in reimbursement under Federal payer systems.

Using experiential activities and scientific slides which provided the evidence based value of the treatments, participants were eager to learn how to apply these ideas in practice with the LTC patient.

Following Richard's presentation, the meeting , led by Alice Massa, OTR, Director of Rehabilitation at the Kings Harbor Health Care Center, focused on current nursing home compliance and reimbursement issues, audit trends and general concerns. All members agreed that the meeting is a very useful networking and information sharing tool.

The next LTCC is slated for January 13, at the Sheraton in Flushing. Look for more information on the TR website. See you there!
