Using the Evidence: Better Decision Making in School Based Practice




















The American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA) actively works to promote positive outcomes for all children in public school education, including the positive contributions of occupational therapy practitioners in school settings.Such contributions in no small part depend on evaluations and interventions being grounded as much as possible in evidence.

To best serve their clients, occupational therapy practitioners must integrate their theoretical and clinical knowledge and their understanding of client interests, values, and goals with scientifically tested information about evaluation and intervention practices. School-based practitioners are being held to increasingly high standards of accountability that require establishing skills in accessing, appraising, and applying scientific information to their clinical practice; developing efficient and systematic processes to collect evaluative information and monitor student progress; and actively contributing to the scientific evidence in school settings.
