OT Named One of the Top Five Recession Proof Jobs by Forbes

While unemployment rates continue to rise to its highest level since April 1983, those of us in the fields of education and health services have reason to be optimistic. According to an article posted on Forbes.com on November 30th, the health care sector has seen some of the country's highest monthly gains in employment.

In the article, Forbes looked to the online job site Vault.com for a snapshot of the current job market. By aggregating 1.2 million jobs, Vault determined which jobs are available in the greatest numbers. Vault puts registered nurses at the top of its in demand list, with occupational therapy coming in at number five. The Bureau of Labor Statistics also noted the health care industry as leading in job gains.

As professionals, we must now keep our eye on health care reform to ensure that we get written into the new Federal mandates. As happened with Medicare back in the 1960's, our presence in the legislation will determine the demand for our services in years to come. It is important that everyone stay in touch with their professional associations (AOTA, APTA and ASHA) and follow their recommendations for pressuring their Federal legislators to include reimbursement for rehabilitation and therapy services for children under pending legislation. Our professional futures and the lives of millions of Americans depend on it!.
