On Tuesday, September 14 TR held their long antcipated conference covering the October 1, 2010 changes to the MDS 3.0 and RUGS IV. Not one seat was empty as rehab managers, administrators and MDS Coordinators clamored to hear the latest configuration of changes.
The result of these changes for everyone in the LTC arena is that substantial adjustments must be made in the way rehab departments' are managed and staffed to ensure revenue capture and quality care. Participants were eager to glean information in preparation for October about staffing and productivity strategies, especially in response to the new limitations in the provision of concurrent therapy, the impact of the MDS 3.0 and RUGS grouper catgories and how to integrate the changes with other LTC reimbursement systems such as Medicaid and Medicare Part B.

Steven Littlehale, MS, GCNS-BC, of PointRight gave a lively presentation on Understanding the MDS 3.0 which focused in on sections relating to rehab, the kinds of information which can be derived from it and used for clinical decision making and identifying candidates for program.
Katy O'Conner, MS, PPT of Medical Director's Services reviewed the changes under RUGS IV and shared her revised model for management under the changes relating to staffing, productiity and case management.
Following the course we received many requests for a follow-up course covering the "nuts and bolt's" of designing, implementing and managing a rehab department under the changes. It is planned for late in January 2011. Stay tuned for more information
