Health Care Reform, RUGS IV and the New York State Budget

After decades of failed attempts - Health Care Reform in this country has passed Congress and was signed into law by President Obama. Whether or not it is good for the country remains to be seen. As health professionals the big question is - how will it impact on our practice, and demand for our services. That remains to be seen too - but we will be following developments.

We have heard that RUGS IV, which was scheduled to be implemented October 1, 2010 has been postponed until 2011 - although we believe some of its provisions - including changes in "concurrent therapy" may be implemented in 2010 as planned. LTC therapy managers and staff can learn more about this latest upheaval and prepare for the future by attending Therapeutic Resources July 15 evening (renamed) seminar titled Thriving and Surviving Under MDS 3.0 and Reimbursement Changes in Long Term Care: A Guide for Rehab Managers. (Register now, as seating is limited!)

In New York State, Governor Patterson has proposed (among other things) a 10% rate cut for home based early intervention services. Several agencies have already sent letters out to providers informing them of a 10% cut to their rates. Therapeutic Resources is waiting to hear if the budget passes, and what the implications will be. Then, we will inform our providers. Hold tight and we will hope for the best. In the meantime, we have sent out information to our providers to take action to avoid cuts to this very important service.

We will continue to provide updates as changes become more clear. Stay tuned!
