Seats Are Going Fast! Register Now for Treating Without Toys

Register now for Treating Without Toys:Integrating Natural Routines, Embedded Interventions and Collaborative Coaching with the Zero to Five Population on April 10, 2011 at Bounce Gymnastics.

As New York State changes its Early Intervention emphasis to engage family involvement, the concept of treating in the natural environment has changed to encompass the natural routines of the family, embedding interventions in the family system as well as using a collaborative coaching method. This course will focus on developing treatment approaches which are tailored to the unique strengths and needs of the child, and can be integrated into the family routines between visits.

Best practice will be introduced as the speaker outlines how to connect treatment goals with therapy interventions, while embedding them into the family routines. Focus will be on using the therapists or caregivers body as a treatment tool (such as using the lap as a bolster, or the torso  as a stabilizing force).Participants will be shown how to use materials and events  available in the natural routine such as the living room furniture,  sibling play, or even a diaper change as an opportunity for therapeutic intervention. Therapeutic handling techniques that incorporate neurological and sensory principles sans toys will be emphasized.Participants will be able to take away a bag of tricks to use in their treatment sessions the very next day. Demonstration of various treatment strategies using a live baby will lead to a  practice session that will be useful for all OT, PT, and SLP providers.
