App Thursday: Twelve Year Old Wins iPad, Gives it to Autistic Boy Instead
Stories like these warm my heart and give me hope for humanity. A 12-year-old girl won an iPad in a contest and, instead of keeping it for herself, she gave it to her foster sister’s autistic son.
Similar to the story we told you about yesterday of the woman who bought a stranger a new iPad, this young girl’s empathy is a reminder of how important it is for us to think of others and help those who need it most.
The 12-year-old, Alayna Stormer, entered a contest sponsered by her orthodontist’s office. Entrants were tasked to generate the most “likes” from their Facebook page. It is no wonder that Alayna won. Someone with that level of compassion has got to be well loved by her peers.
After winning the iPad, she gave it to five-year-old Kyle, the autistic son of her foster sister. “iPads can help with autism a lot because there are lots of apps that can help keep them focused,” Alayna said.
To make this story even better, Alayna’s orthodontist’s office, Klar Voorhees Orthodontics in Virginia Beach, was so impressed with her generosity that they gave her another one to keep for herself.
“I’m sure it was something she had thought about keeping for her[self] but for her to give it to someone else is very nice,” said Paula Whitehurst with Klar Voorhees Orthodontics.
Doesn’t this story make you think about ways that you can help someone else? It doesn’t have to be a family member and it doesn’t have to be an iPad, but we should all take note of Alayna Stormer’s kindness and think about how we could better ourselves by being better to those around us.
