Long Term Care Council Meeting Focuses On Applying New Technology

The quarterly Long Term/Subacute Care Council Meeting was held at the Therapeutic Resources offices on March 1.  The group mission is to provide free education and support for rehabilitation managers working in the New York Metropolitan area.

Our guest speaker, Todd Ostrow, OTR is the Director of Rehabilitation at the Metropolitan Jewish Geriatric Center.  His presentation focused on the use of emerging technologies in the treatment of patients in the long term care/subactue arena.  He showed us how various computer software programs can incentivize patients to participate in their rehabilitation, as well as help with discharge planning.  Virtual reality devices such as the Wii combines cognitive and physical skill elements, which patients and their families can enjoy, while helping them reach their functional goals.  A vendor from "Vigourous Mind - The Brain Wellness Software Suite" demonstrated a touchscreen program which can be used in the clinic or  patient's room and can even go home with the patient (for a nominal monthly fee).  In addition to providing stimulating activities which enhance brain function, the program also provides opportunities for social networking,  recollection (though imbedded pictures from the 1920's to 1970's), along with music and photograph applications.  The program can run on a tablet such as the IPad, on a laptop or table top computer.

The presentation was followed by a group discussion, led by Todd reviewing current issues in long term care relating to reimbursement, documentation and the survey process.   All participants were extremely enthusiastic about the meeting.  Next one in planned for June.  Details to be announced.
